描述.As new discoveries complicate the scientific picture of the universe, the evolving theories about the nature of space and time and the origins and fate of the universe threaten to become overwhelming. Enter David Seargent. Continuing the author‘s series of books popularizing strange astronomy facts and knowledge, .Weird Universe. explains the bizarre, complicated terrain of modern cosmology for lay readers..From exploring some of the strange consequences of the theories of special and general relativity, to probing time dilation and the twin and mother-and-baby “paradoxes” and the theory that the universe can be mathematically considered as a hologram, all of the latest findings and conjectures are clearly described in non-technical language. The development of quantum physics and the more recent developments of string and M-theory are looked at, in addition to several hypotheses that have not won wide acceptance from the scientific community, such as modified gravity. Enter the wonderfully weird world of these theories and gain a new appreciation for the latest findings in cosmological research..

From Water World to Inflation; Humanity Faces the Universe, osmologies and cosmogonies (i.e. theories of the nature and origin of the universe) come from a school of Greek thinkers living on the Ionian coast of what is nowadays Turkey. The man honored by today’s historians of scientific thought as deserving the title of the first known scientist was Thales of Miletus (circa 624–circa 546 .) (Fig. 1.1).

The Shape, Size, Age and Origin of the Universe, turing it). Triangles in the first type of space have angles that sum to 180° just as we were taught in elementary school, but the sum of all the angles of triangles in the second and third types of space are either greater than 180° (for Riemannian) or less than 180 for Lobachevskian geometries.

Observations and Ideas from the Left Field, perience quite satisfactorily. Things only truly get weird when we pass beyond this and deal with dimensions, velocities and energy levels that pass far beyond our normal experience. Then we encounter the apparent weirdness of relativity, quantum physics and so forth.

Of Atoms, Quanta, Strings and Branes; Just How Weird Can the Universe Really Be?,ics grew out of this conception of nature. Basically, physicists of the post-Newtonian era saw themselves as investigating the laws by which this great clockwork mechanism operated and refining them to ever greater precision.

From Water World to Inflation; Humanity Faces the Universe, ature and from whence did it come? Many and varied have been the attempts at answering these questions. Stories of universal genesis, most frequently framed in the symbolism of myth, date to the earliest stirrings of human consciousness, but the first accounts that we might recognize as scientific c
