Phosphorus,atter can be mineralized, but when it is, it will be adsorbed by the sediment unless it is quickly absorbed by plants or bacteria. Sediment acts as a sink for phosphorus, and high rates of plant growth in aquatic ecosystems depend upon a continuous input of phosphorus.
