Vaiseta argues that the patients relied on medical discourse to interpret reality, but did not necessarily fully identify with it, at times negotiated with it or even used it manipulatively. The medical discourse could act as a defensive shield for the self, a tool to protect oneself from hostile, alien, dangerous reality.
