In Days of YoreAn account is given of the early work on the detection of optical Cherenkov radiation from extensive cosmic ray air showers (EAS). A brief discussion is likewise presented of the discovery of radio pulses from such showers.

TeV and PeV Source StatusIn this Rapporteur paper, the status of the various celestial sources of TeV and PeV gamma rays is presented. This is not a review paper; rather it is a report based on mostly the presentations made at the workshop by the various groups based on their respective observations.

A Survey of Gamma Ray Facilities - Current and PlannedThis survey is based on the information provided by participants at a Workshop session under the Chairmanship of Professor J Gaidos. Further Evidence for the Emission of 1000 GeV Gamma Rays with 12 ms Periodicity from Cygnus X-3The X-ray binary Cygnus X-3 has long been suspected of containing a young fast pulsar and the first evidence for this, suggesting a period of 12.59 ms, was reported by us in 1985. We here report further evidence for the reality of the 12.59 ms periodicity and indications of value for the secular derivative for the period.

Vhe Gamma Rays From Her X-1 in June–July 1985We have observed Her X-1 for 29 hours during June and July, 1985, with the Haleakala 10 m. Cherenkov-light gamma-ray telescope, operated at a threshold below 300 GeV. Special attention was given to a search for bursts. We report evidence for possible bursts on days 165 and 168 at orbit phases of.87,.93, and.60 of the binary system.

Cosmic-Ray Acceleration in UHE and VHE Gamma-Ray Sources including Her X-1, LMC X-4, Cen X-3 and 4U 0115 + 63. These observations, if subsequently found to be statistically significant, imply the acceleration of high energy cosmic rays in these sources. In this paper, we discuss briefly some of the models so far proposed for cosmic ray acceleration in these sources.
