The climate system,crublands, has an entirely different feel about it from the tropical rainforest of Brazil, or the conifer forests of Canada. Vegetation is as important a part of the landscape as topography and the architecture of buildings, and yet it is an accepted and almost subconscious part of the order of things.

The desert makes the desert: Climate feedbacks from the vegetation of arid zones,imates that cannot support a tree cover, and their natural vegetation is open grassland, scrub or desert. There is no doubt that the location of these arid zones is largely dictated by broad-scale geography (as we saw in Chapter 1), with several factors tending to produce dry climates.
