描述What is French? Where is it spoken? Who speaks it? How is it spoken? These are some of the questions which this book attempts to answer. It explores the many varieties of French and demonstrates that the choice of a particular variety depends upon a number of factors - some relating to the actual speaker, her/his age, sex, socio-economic status and place of origin, others to the nature of the situation producing the variety. Special attention is paid to geographical variation.

However, before that can be undertaken, it is important to define what is meant by a creole and to contrast it with two other terms which are occasionally used to refer to different aspects of the same linguistic phenomenon, lingua franca and pidgin.
