描述.This book focuses on the increasingly popular phenomenon of veganism, a way of living that attempts to exclude all animal products on ethical grounds. Using data from biographical interviews with vegans, the author untangles the complex topic of veganism to understand vegan identity from a critical and biographical perspective. Shaped by the participants’ biographical narratives, the study considers the diverse topics of family, faith, sexuality, gender, music, culture, embodiment and activism and how these influence the lives and identities of vegans. It also highlights the hostility vegans face, and how this hostility functions in the everyday, and intersects with other aspects of their identity and biography, exemplified through ‘coming out’ and ‘queer’ narratives of veganism...Understanding Veganism .will be of particular interest to those engaged in the fields of biographical research, critical animal studies or more broadly with an interest in animal advocacy.

Queering Veganism, unstable, flexible and contingent. Grubbs (2012) questions the potential ‘queerness’ of all attempts to problematize ‘normative tropes of hierarchy that naturalize speciesism’. This project further develops ideas surrounding ‘queerness’ and ‘veganism’.

Demonstrating Veganism, scuss the importance of access to alternative narratives in allowing people to discover and engage with animal advocacy, achieving those ‘turning point’ moments, in particular through the concept of a ‘cultural menu’ (Smith and Sparkes 2011).

I also discuss concepts such as ‘speciesism’ (Ryder 1989, 1998),‘carnism’ (

Queering Veganism, to highlight the fundamentally contested nature of identity (Halperin 1995; Plummer 2003, 2005). Though veganism can represent a fairly rigid and universal set of principles relating to behaviour, a queer theorization of veganism would conceptualize vegan identity as being far from fixed orobjectiv
