描述The central subject matter of this book is Einstein‘s special theory of relativiry. While it is a book that is written primarily for a lay audience this does not necessarily mean an audience not versed in the ways of doing science. Rather, this book is written for anyone wishing to consider the nature of the scientific enterprise: where ideas come from, how they become established and accepted, what the relationships are among theories, predictions, and measurements, or the relationship between ideas in a scientific theory and the values held to be important within the larger culture. Some readers will find it strange that I raise any of these issues. It is a common view in our culture that the status of knowledge within science is totally different from the status of knowledge in other areas of human endeavor. The word "science" stems from the Latin word meaning "to know" and indeed, knowledge which scientists acquire in their work is commonly held to be certain, unyielding, and absolute. Consider how we use the adjective "scientific. " There are investors and there are scientific investors. There are socialists and there are scientific socialists. There are exterminators and ther

Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity and Its Consequences can be understood as a modification of the Newtonian theory of measurement. It is important to emphasize that the Newtonian theory of measurement had been accepted long before Newton and was so much a part of the thinking of natural philosophers that Newton hardly discussed it and almost never refe

Further Consequences of the Heuristic Nature of the Special Theory of Relativityo examined how such observers would compare their measurements of inertial mass. The Lorentz and the Einstein theories predict the same consequences because they make use of the same transformation equations for relating temporal and spatial coordinates for different inertial observers. Although the

As If It Never Happened: The French Response1911 was almost complete silence. Until Einstein visited France in 1910, there was hardly a mention of him in the French literature and no mention in the context of the physics and mathematics problems we now associate with the special theory of relativity. The contrast with Germany is startling, an

Defending the Practical: The American Responsef the Atlantic, and the three European countries on the other side. Second, in comparison to the European communities, American culture is extremely young and the American physics community was, until the last decades of the nineteenth century, virtually nonexistent. Certainly, American physics had
