It also offers newperspectives toward our understanding of the relationship betweenfirst and second language acquisition, Universal Grammar (UG), and thetarget language input. Specifically, examination of the L2 developmentof pied-piping and preposition stranding in English questions andrelative clauses shows that the required preposition is frequentlyomitted by learners who have demonstrated accurate subcategorizationknowledge of verbal complements in related declarative constructions.The `null-prep‘ data in the L2 grammar leads to an importantcross-linguistic investigation of this largely ignored syntacticphenomenon in the world‘s languages; it also motivates exploration ofthe complex English input learners receive as positive evidence.
