Pseudo-Differential OperatorsWe will now turn to a class of operators which — roughly speaking (details below) — are locally presentable in the form.where.is the Fourier transform of u (see the crash course above in I.8), p is the “amplitude” of the operator and . its “phase function”.

Elliptic Operators over Closed ManifoldsIn this chapter, we show that out of formal properties (invertibility) of symbols, a series of existence, regularity, and finiteness results for the associated pseudo-differential operators (Fredholm operators) can be obtained.

Elliptic Differential Operators of First Order with Boundary ConditionsIn II.5 we saw that a topological object σ(P) ∈ Iso.(E,F) is associated with each elliptic operator P: C. (E) ⊒ C. (F), whereby index P depends only on the homotopy type of σ(P). Here SX is the covariant sphere bundle for a Riemannian metric for X, and E and F are Hermitian vector bundles over X.

The Index Formula in the Euclidean CaseIn the preceding chapter, we used analytic tools (the Gohberg-Krein Index Theorem for Wiener-Hopf operators) to prove the Bott Periodicity Theorem. We will now use it to derive an index theorem for elliptic integral operators in ℝ.. The basic idea is perhaps best described via homotopy theory

Algebraic Properties. Operators of Finite Rankr, the index no longer depends on the explicit form of the map, but only on the dimensions of the vector spaces between which it operates. More precisely, show that every linear map T: H → H’ where H and H’ are finite-dimensional vector spaces has index given by index T = dim H — dim H’.

Analytic Methods. Compact Operatorstheory of solutions of n linear equations in n unknowns. In fact, the limit process n → ∞ marks the emergence of functional analysis which went beyond the methods of linear algebra while being motivated by its questions and results. This occurred mainly in the study of integral equations.

Elliptic Boundary-Value Systems I (Differential Operators)nient proofs. First, we will discuss the “idea of ellipticity of boundary-value conditions”, i.e., the connection between boundary value problems of partial differential equations and initial conditions of ordinary differential equations and thus finally the algebraic essence of the “idea of ellipticity.”

Elliptic Boundary-Value Systems II (Survey)mple examples the technique of reducing a boundary-value prob lem to a problem on the boundary. This “Poisson principle” provides the main idea for the solution of elliptic boundary-value problems, particu larly for the computation of the index.
