But What is the Driving Mechanism?, He said, for example, that he could reduce everyone’s heating bill to zero: ‘Just take the roof off their houses.’ He confidently presumed people would then turn off their heating systems. He gave me one of his recent papers to read. It comprised three parts. Part one was pretty much a statement of faith in free markets.

Chemistry and Egos Muscle in,d. If it was a topic he considered worthy of his attention and your conclusion was at odds with his then you were clearly wrong. The most notorious occurrence was when Alan Zindler of Columbia University presented a new analysis of a set of isotopic data from mantle rocks.

,Earth’s Lessons: Humility, Power and Science, ndamentals, or the truth. Information about the past or the deep Earth is always incomplete, so it is harder to claim you know exactly what is going on. But even Newton and Einstein did not really know what is going on.

Some Chemical Clarifying, June 1997. At the first all the usual attitudes, debates and conflicts were evident regarding whether the mantle is layered or not. I had been arguing for nearly a decade that heat flow and topography were strongly against layering, but that argument had little effect. It required four sentences and some high-school physics to appreciate it.
