,The “Big Four” of the Golden Age of pictorial star maps,o Brahe and Johannes Hevelius determined the locations of the stars using naked eye observations. Exemplified by Astronomer Royal John Flamsteed, telescopes and micrometers were added to these instruments, which made their positioning even more accurate.

The transition to non-pictorial star maps,e located in a coordinate system that is current and very precise. What made previous maps appealing were their anthropomorphic and historic qualities (which in past times were relevant to their mapping function), but such features are now seen as so much unnecessary superficial clutter.

Collecting celestial maps and prints,orization (if any), displaying the map, preservation, and price. Much of what will be said below could be said of any antiquarian map, be it celestial or terrestrial. I will only touch on some of the highlights specifically related to collecting celestial maps; more information is given in the references at the end.
