描述Between the Nazi occupation and the anti-communist revolution of 1956, Poland underwent twelve years of Stalinist rule. Using recently-opened archives, historians and social scientists from four countries give the first analysis of the rise and fall of this system. The book is organised in three parts: Construction (external and domestic), Conflicts (above all, communists against the Church and peasantry) and Collapse (during 1956). An Epilogue reviews the whole period in the light of contemporary political debates.

Social Protest and Political Crisis in 1956not plucked from thin air. Politicians responded to shifts, both actual and potential, within popular attitudes and behaviour. Despite their claim to omniscience, and other pretensions of official ideology, communist leaders were acutely aware of the social context of their actions. Following a disg

Diplomatic Prelude to tease Molotov as being ‘your pact with Hitler’. They covered three main areas: the fate of the Baltic States, the future boundaries of Poland and the eventual border between the USSR and Romania. For Stalin at the end of 1941, the first two looked the most problematical.

Introduction: Reconstructing the Paste ‘collaborated’ with the previous regime.. But liberals of the centre replied that the use of archives in contemporary political struggles ‘lacked dignity’ and recalled Max Weber’s admonition that ‘every new document that comes to light after decades revives undignified lamentations, hatred and sco

Diplomatic Preludeto Moscow in December 1941, Molotov deliberately stressed that one of the most important objectives of Soviet policy was ‘our Western borders’.. The borders he meant included territories already seized by the USSR in 1939–40 under what Stalin- in front of foreign visitors, including Churchill — used
