Electronic States of Transition Metal Ions in Solids,We consider the Hamiltonian for a transition metal ion in a solid and we separate it into its electronic and vibrational components. The energy levels of the electronic Hamiltonian are found for the case of transition metal ions in static crystal fields of various symmetries.

Radiative and Nonradiative Processes on Transition Metal Ions in Solids,The factors affecting radiative and nonradiative processes on transition metal ions in solid materials are discussed; these determine the quantum efficiency of the material. The effect of lattice vibrations on the shape of radiative transitions and on the quantum efficiency is considered.

Laser Processes in Semiconductors,In this contribution we shortly review the more common processes yielding laser emission in semiconductors e.g. inelastic scattering processes between various quasiparticles, recombination in an electron-hole plasma, transitions involving dopants and parametric processes. The possibilities to pump these lasers are shortly outlined.
