Specific Interactions Involving Hormonal and Other Changes,al review of hormones in plant disease recently has been accomplished by Sequiera (34) and Van Andel and Fuchs (41) while certain other aspects of hormones in diseased plants were covered in a recent symposium to be published (10). Consequently, it seems more appropriate for me to emphasize the spec

Effects of Structure of Active Compounds on Biological Activity and Specificity, eptible and resistant to those toxins. The Phytotoxins with the most selective toxicity are the host-specific toxins; these are much more active in altering the metabolism of host plants susceptible to the toxin-producing micro-organism. Many host-specific toxins are unusually potent causing biologi

Protein Specificity in Plant Disease Development: Protein Sharing Between Host and Parasite,he basis of susceptibility of plants to disease or the reason for host specificity of plant pathogens. These views encompass immunogenetic responses, cytoplasmic reactions involving common (proteins) antigens, and lectin-protein reactions between host and parasite.

The Role of Phytotoxins in Specificity, agents which determine specificity in plant-pathogen interactions. Five years ago, a preceding Institute was devoted entirely to the role of Phytotoxins in plant disease. In the published proceedings of the Institute, Graniti (8) addressed problems of terminology and classification of toxins associ

Role of Preformed Factors in Specificity, ccurring in the plant before, and independently of infection. Another pathogen, however, may have the ability to overcome this established barrier. Also included are diseases in which infection is prevented by the deficiency of essential factors in the plant or in the parasite.

Phytoalexins and the Specificity of Plant-Parasite Interaction, cribes this diverse group of compounds since their accumulation after infection appears to be primarily a function of stress rather than of infection. Their relationship to stress, however, does not preclude their participation in mechanisms for disease resistance. Phytoalexins are produced by non-h

Induction of Hypersensitive Responses to Fungal Pathogens,., which was studied in our Institute for a doctoral dissertation by Van Dijkman (13). This disease was a fortunate choice and could well serve as a model for explaining hypersensitivity in other diseases.

Induction and Suppression of the Hypersensitive Reaction Caused by Phytopathogenic Bacteria : Speciintroduction of many incompatible phytopath-ogenic bacteria elicits the rapid cell collapse associated with a hypersensitive reaction (HR) have stimulated numerous investigations into the nature and specificity of this phenomenon (5, 12). Initial results provided the basis for the attractive hypothe

Opening Address, ciation and taxonomy. This is rather hard for a plant pathologist such as I am, so I hope you will listen sympathetically to a somewhat indisciplined discourse in mycological plant pathology, and a somewhat careful approach to the main theme of the Institute.
