,“Free” Electrons in Solids,electron system, because of its very much smaller mass, follows the motion of the nuclei or cores almost instantaneously. From the viewpoint of the electron system this also means that for the electron dynamics one can regard the nuclear or core motion as extremely slow and, in the limiting case, as nonexistent.

The Electronic Bandstructure of Solids,llowing initially free atoms to gradually approach one another, then the discrete nature of the energy levels of the isolated atoms should clearly be reflected in the properties of the solid. Indeed, discrete energy levels must be present in order to explain, e.g., the sharp resonance-like structures observed in the optical spectra of solids.
