Insomnia Assessmentcifically important in insomnia patients, when to order investigations, what investigations are useful and the limitations of those investigations. I will conclude with a suggested formula for conceptualizing the patient’s insomnia and organizing the information you have gleaned so that the appropriate treatments can be selected.

Non-REM Parasomnias and REM Sleep Behaviour Disorderive daytime somnolence. The consequences of parasomnias are not limited to the patient but often affect the bed partner as well. People are often amnesic for their parasomnia but, with both non-REM parasomnias and REM sleep behaviour disorder (RBD), patients may recall some dream mentation.

Obstructive Sleep Apnoeauring sleep. The resultant complete cessations of breathing are called apnoeas if their duration is 10 s or more. Hypopnoeas are a result of reduced inspiratory flow when the airway narrows but does not fully collapse (Strollo and Rogers 1996).
