描述This book‘s discussion of skin bleaching, lightening and toning in Black Atlantic zones disengages with the usual tropes of Black Nationalism and global white supremacy such as ‘the desire to be white‘, ‘low self-esteem‘ and ‘self-hatred‘ and instead engages with the global multi-billion dollar market in lighter skins with products from local cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies and entrepreneurs. This practice can be for short-term strategic purposes and the production of bleached lightness and new subjectivities through skin shades across Black Atlantic zones - the UK, USA, Caribbean, Latin America and the Africa continent- is also a simultaneous critique of continuing pigmentocracy and darker skin disadvantage. This book seeks to decolonize skin bleaching, lightening and toning by exploring its racialized gender political and libidinal economies in the Black Atlantic. In so doing it moves past the notion that global white supremacy dynamizes the practice to a position where the interaction of colourism and ‘post-race‘ neo-liberal racialization aesthetics becomes the focus.

Self-Hate: An Old Debate Revisited,a. Bleaching produces bodies and communities engaged in ‘race’ performativity, which does not produce the failed whitening of colonial mimicry. Instead, it produces a third body which actively engages critique of the political economy of Black Atlantic skin inequality. Bleaching makes the body’s sub

Nadinola and Glutathione: Refining and Advancing a Dangerous Practice, onal as well as transracial. The chapter looks at Nadinola ads in newspapers, magazines and online from the 19th to the 21st century, as well as online infomercials for glutathione, and edu-mercials to see what excitable speech and subjectivation emerge in terms of skin. Introduction: Skin,ng the practice, and skin bleaching as decolonizing practice. The decolonial analysis speaks against the givens of Black self-hatred, low self-esteem or desire to be white because we are long past Fanon’s (1986) ‘mimic (wo)men’ of colonialism.

A Brief Black/White/Light History of Skin Bleaching/ Lightening/Toning,dy a lightness that is not antithetical to Blackness and a part of it. Third space skins emerge in the interstices of white supremacy and Black nationalism, as women embrace artifice through ‘post-race’, self-affirming, aesthetic enhancement and choice.
