描述In order to survive, bacteria must constantly monitor their structure and physiology. Adaptive behaviours are established by using environmental sensors and response regulators. These communication modules regulate a wide variety of signals including host detection and invasion, cell cycle, metabolite utilization, starvation and many others. The purpose of this volume is to give an overview of the various systems and to introduce recent advances in understanding selected systems of pathogenic bacteria.

Introduction, ife. Pathogenic bacteria, like all living organisms, have developed efficient systems to scout the surroundings and adapt their life according to the signals that they can sense. The signals sensed by bacteria can be divided into three main categories: those deriving from the environment, those deri

Signal Transduction and Iron-Mediated Regulation of Virulence Factors, the environment presented by their host. Essentially all microbial pathogens have evolved specific mechanisms for the assimilation of sufficient concentrations of iron from their environment to support growth. It is remarkable that sensing the available concentration of iron provides not only a sign

Signal Transduction and Environmental Stress in Control of , Virulence, infections in severely burned patients and chronic respiratory infections in individuals with cystic fibrosis. Expression of virulence factors in this organism is controlled by several tiers of regulatory elements. Many of these regulatory factors belong to the superfamily of signal transduction sy

Environmental Control of Virulence Functions and Signal Transduction in ,,pathogens causing systemic diseases. . is a common human pathogen which causes gastrointestinal syndromes of various severities, ranging from mild self-limited diarrhea to mesenteric adenitis evoking an appendicitis. Although all three yersiniae invade their host via different routes, they share a c
