描述The last two decades have witnessed a profound change in the way we receive the literary texts of early modern England. One could call this a move from ‘text‘ to ‘culture‘. The Dramatic Life of Objects in the Early Modern Theaterhe dramatic adventures of “amorous knight” that Stephen Gosson derides. Indeed, one of the clearest departures that early modern playwrights made from Aristotle’s precepts came in the ready employment of those “lifeless things” that the . goes on to criticize when used as a means of recognition..

Shakespeare and the End of Historyespeare critics face a similar dilemma when deciding whether what they read is “Renaissance” or “early modern” literature. For some time now, “Renaissance” has dominated the critical culture of Shakespeare studies. But its popularity and cachet do not stop there: “Renaissance” is everywhere we turn.

Shakespeare and the Composite Text texts. In addition to this emphasis on the personal, literary works of the early modern period in England tend to be unusually copious—thick, that is, with “stuff,” including quotations of other texts, as well as descriptions of and references to material from the world outside their pages.. The New Materialism in Early Modern Studiesly modern studies. Indeed, I call this a “new” materialism not only because of its momentum as a critical genre but because it comes as a disciplinary answer to a question that the epigraph asks us to ask: What future can materialist criticism of early modern texts have after Marx? I mean the “after
