描述Asynchronous, or unclocked, digital systems have severalpotential advantages over their synchronous counterparts. Inparticular, they address a number of challenging problems faced by thedesigners of large-scale synchronous digital systems: powerconsumption, worst-case timing constraints, and engineering and designreuse issues associated with the use of a fixed-rate global clock.Moreover, while for synchronous systems these problems are exacerbatedby increasing system size, asynchronous systems promise to scale moregracefully. ..Sequential Optimization of Asynchronous and SynchronousFinite-State. .Machines: Algorithms and Tools. makes threecontributions to the field of sequential optimization for finite-statemachines: 1) it introduces several new provably-optimal algorithms forthe synthesis and optimization of asynchronous finite-state machines(FSMs); 2) it presents practical software implementations of each ofthese algorithms; and 3) it introduces a complete new CAD package,called MINIMALIST, binding these tools into a state-of-the-arttechnology-independent synthesis path for `burst-mode‘ asynchronouscircuits. Throughout this book, real-world industrial designs are usedas benchmark

OPTIMISTO: Synchronous State Minimization for Optimum Output Logic,s chapter narrows .’s focus solely to the complexity of the output logic, in order to obtain stronger results. Useful in its own right, this new state minimization method also serves as the foundation for a similar method for asynchronous burst-mode state machines in the next chapter.
