Multiple Reflections,eflection method based on primary reflections works at all. The explanation seems to be that, although multiples exist whenever there are primaries, their amplitudes relative to primaries must be small. When this is not the case, multiple reflections are a serious problem. Most poor records probably result from severe multiple interference.

Velocity Estimation,such as a linear function with depth, . = . + ., where . is the velocity at datum and . is constant, have some merit in velocity estimation (Slotnik, 1959). An intriguing idea, however, is using surface measurements to estimate the velocity from the normal moveout of seismic events.

Migration Techniques,ties each contribute their unique characteristics to the seismic record section and, in complexly faulted and folded areas, make interpretation of the geological layering from the seismic sections difficult unless the data are migrated.

Distortion Operators and Deconvolution,tenuation, is reflected by changes in the acoustic impedance of the subsurface layering. The field records contain additive noise and multiples in addition to the distorted reflections. As a further complication, the basic seismic signature may vary from place to place, making deduction of the geological layering still more difficult.
