Whose Responsibility: And What Happened to the Letters?, raised by Kate’s story. In this chapter I return to the questions of why Kate wrote her many long letters to me, why some of them disappeared on the way and why she was dumped in front of her sister’s house when she was dying. In other words: How do secrets shift their content over time and who is responsible for whom?

Intersecting Trajectories,n child health comprehensible and relevant to people and was confronted with their questioning of my focus. The AIDS epidemic was at its height by then and no treatment of any kind was available to people in Uganda at this stage.

Questions of Belonging,to resources. The chapter juxtaposes different women’s accounts so as to illuminate different experiences of the same events, periods and people, and it includes my own experience of having their negotiations over belonging and responsibility go through me.
