The Playful Projectingness’ [.]. Sartre’s great work, . is an attempt to explain human experience in terms of nothingness. Despite its obvious indebtedness to Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, Freud and above all, to Heidegger, its achievement is unique and impressive and in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War it brought Sartre great fame.

In such a system the faculties and capacities of the mind are not innate or natural but are made to be; they are an historical achievement. The intellect is a product of culture; it is, itself, an artefact of civilization.
