描述Soil science is perhaps one of the oldest practical sciences, having been of concern to man probably from the time he progressed from a strictly preda tory life to one in which agriculture became important. In view of the anti quity of concern with the subject, it is perhaps surprising that it can be approached from a fresh viewpoint, as is done in this book. Because soil science is an applied science, it is not surprising that the approach is usually descriptive, rather than imaginative. For agriculturalists and other land users, perhaps the most important part of soil science is the description of soils and the capacities of such soils to maintain crops, and this is reflected by the fact that soil science is usually treated ima highly descriptive manner, with soil classification being one of the main efforts. The treatment of the subject from a geological point of view, with considerable emphasis on the evolution of soils and the reasons governing their composition and form, makes this a highly readable book. Books on soil science are timely, with present-day concern with such major problems as the pollution of our environment and the possibility of overreaching our capacity fo

Geochemical and Pedochemical Weathering,e second stage the effects of vegetation, both living and dead, together with the effects of metabolism of microorganisms living in the geochemically altered rock material, are added to the continued inorganic processes, and this combination produces a soil which is the culmination of weathering at that particular locality.

,The Earth’s Crust,d the core of the earth. The crust is the exposed surface of the lithosphere that has been modified in various ways by climate and by the vegetation that forms a cover where the climate is favorable to the growth of plants. According to the climate we find regions of tundra, prairies, semitropical a

The Weathering Environment, usceptibility to alteration by weathering processes. Furthermore, the chemical environment in which rocks are altered varies with position on the earth’s surface and also with local conditions. The environments under which most atmospheric weathering takes place are oxidizing with an oxidation poten

Physical Weathering, ing occurs in very cold, dry or very hot, dry climates, and splitting is largely due to insolation. A chemical analysis of the fragmented rock would be similar to that of the solid rock. Disintegration of rocks in moist climates accompanies chemical weathering.

Biological Activity in Weathering, tion of the microflora and chemical processes, produces the soil humus. The effect of the flora and its products reacting with the mineral particles of weathered rocks changes geochemical weathering into pedochemical weathering and affects the consequent development of soils.
