描述.Resolving Semantic Ambiguity. arrrays the work of leading theorists on the issues surrounding the meaning and interpretation of ambiguous text. The chapters are organized around three major themes: (1) retrieval, (2) representation of words, and (3) text as a context. The book offers a number of new challenges to the role of context in language processing, some striking new evidence on the repetition of homographs in different contexts, and new approaches to resolution capable of being incorporated into either modular or network models. In several papers the problem of ambiguity is extended to include the problem of weak ambiguity and understanding text themes. The book provides a unique starting point for researchers approaching the problems of meaning in cognitive science, psychology, and computational linguistics.

Varieties of Ambiguity: What Are We Seeking?ge processing. For psycholinguists, the work has focused largely on understanding the processes by which people arrive at a single interpretation of a message that has at least two readily discernible meanings. Sentences 1–3 give some classic examples of the kinds of sentences whose comprehension mi

What’s in a Context?edging the attractiveness of these structures for representing knowledge, he pointed out how “the same semantic network notations could be used by different people (or even by the same person at different times for different examples) to mean different things” (p. 53). Dynamic Contextual Processes and Lexical Access selection of the meanings of homographs. In some research (e.g., Marcel, 1980; Schvaneveldt, Meyer, & Becker, 1976), the context has taken the form of a single word that is intended to bias the interpretation of a homograph. The effects of this bias on the subsequent recognition of a target are the

Lexical Ambiguity and Context: An Activation-Suppression Model two extraordinary claims: first, that conscious awareness is a unique, independent component of cognition, with properties which differ from other components; and second, that most of our data concerning the nature of mental representations directly reflect this awareness component. The gist of Yat
