Firefighter First Responders,As of 2013, the most recent year for which data are available, the United States was protected by approximately 30,000 fire departments. Nearly 2500 of these departments were all career, protecting primarily communities of 25,000 people or more. Almost 20,000 were all volunteer, typically protecting communities of fewer than 25,000 people.
