Studies of Synoptic and Mesoscale Atmospheric Features from Satellites and mesoscale convective complexes - as well as providing a unique source of their ‘climatology’. AVHRR images have formed the basis of a method to estimate ocean to air heat fluxes during cold air outbreaks, and severe thunderstorms can be analysed and predicted by using rapid scan images.

We shall consider both scanning and staring sensing devices. The main thrust of the presentation will be to discuss the different experimental and operational systems which have been deployed to collect optimal data for selected purposes.
