Introduction, are chiefly in the telecommunications field although the principles introduced here can be used much more widely. From our viewpoint the study of reliability needs a combination of electrical engineering (for system analysis), statistics (for the analysis of failure data), and probability theory (for the prediction of failure patterns).

Reliability studies should be introduced as early as possible in this design phase since modifications introduced at later stages in the development are costly and time-consuming.

System Reliability, predicting the reliability of the simplest type of system, the series reliability system, using component failure data. Chapter 7 briefly describes methods of increasing system reliability and then Chapters 8 and 9 give reliability prediction methods for the more complex fault-tolerant systems.

,The Statistics of Failure — II,nd confidence intervals for CFR components make up most of the remainder of the chapter. Sections 4.2 to 4.7 inclusive contain general plotting methods. Section 4.8 deals with CFR components only. Section 4.9 indicates briefly how reliability parameters for non-CFR components may be estimated.
