描述These Proceedings result from the papers and discussions of the U.S.-Japan Seminar "Recent Advances in the Understanding of Solar Flares" held in Tokyo October 5-8, 1982. The meeting was sponsored jointly by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and the u.S. National Science Foundation. The principal aim of the meeting was to obtain the most up-to-date physical picture of solar flares by bringing together results from the recent observations by the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) and HINOTORI satellites, together with other satellite data and ground-based data at both optical and radio wavelengths. These data cover the recent maximum of the solar activity cycle. The SMM and HINOTORI introduced a new dimension in flare observations by carrying out the first hard X-ray imaging observations, and the organizers especially felt that an intense discussion of the significance of these results in the context of flare theories would be important. Starting with an introductory presentation of the characteristics of the instruments on board the satellites, the sessions of the first day and the beginning of the second dealt mainly with energy transport in flares and with .the formation pr

Solar Flare X-ray Spectra from the P78-1 Spacecraftdiagnostics used in interpreting the spectra are summarized, and the origin of the thermal soft X-ray emitting plasma is discussed in light of the P78-1 results, earlier data, and numerical simulations of magnetic flux tubes heated to solar flare temperatures.

Solar Instruments on the P78-1 Spacecraftuilt by the Aerospace Corporation and the Naval Research Laboratory. The hard X-ray spectrometers were built by the Aerospace Corporation and the white light coronagraph was supplied by the Naval Research Laboratory. Most of these instruments are still returning data.

Magnetic Theories of Solar Flaresm, or emerging flux. The second type is thought to be the result of an eruptive MHD instability that is either spontaneous or triggered from outside. After the eruption the magnetic field lines that have been blown open reconnect back down in a way that has now been simulated numerically.

Non-Thermal and Non-Equilibrium Effects in Soft X-ray Flare Spectra-state. A search of suitable complex flares with multiple impulsive features has shown indications of soft X-ray line intensity anomalies, consistent with the presence of a non-thermal electron component.

Transport and Containment of Plasma, Particles and Energy within Flaresture at the time of a flare and a complex and changing magnetic topology during the course of a flare. The rocket data are examined for constraints on flare cooling, within the context of simple loop models. These results form a basis for comments on the limitations of simple loop models for flares.

Thermal Evolution of Flare Plasmaursts is confirmed by the observation of an electron temperature increase at the time interval of hard X-ray spikes and a quantitative comparison between thermal energy content and hard X-ray energy input. Non-thermal electrons of 10 keV < E < 30 keV energy may play an important role in pre- and post-burst phases.

Upper Limits on the Total Radiant Energy of Solar Flarespulsive emission; for a gradual component, about 4 x 10. ergs total radiant energy. The limits lie about an order of magnitude higher than the total radiant energy estimated from the various known emission components, suggesting that no heretofore unknown dominant component of flare radiation exists.
