描述.Ecological and environmental research has increased in scope and complexity in the last few decades, from simple systems with a few managed variables to complex ecosystems with many uncontrolled variables. These issues encompass problems that are inadequately addressed using the types of carefully controlled experiments that dominate past ecological research. Contemporary challenges facing ecologists include whole ecosystem responses to planned restoration activities and ecosystem modifications, as well as unplanned catastrophic events such as biological invasions, natural disasters, and global climate changes. Major perturbations implicated in large-scale ecological alterations share important characteristics that challenge traditional experimental design and statistical analyses. These include:..* Lack of randomization, replication and independence.* Multiple scales of spatial and temporal variability.* Complex interactions and system feedbacks...In real world ecology, standard replicated designs are often neither practical nor feasible for large-scale experiments, yet ecologists continue to cling to these same standard designs and related statistical analyses. Case studies that

Avian Spatial Responses to Forest Spatial Heterogeneity at the Landscape Level: Conceptual and Statecological processes, such as deforestation, forest homogenization, and escalating landscape heterogeneity. The goal of this chapter is to quantify the relationship between forest cover data and ovenbird (.) abundance—a ground nesting passerine that breeds in contiguous forests—in southern Ontario (

The Role of Paleoecology in Whole-Ecosystem Science, ubsidies, and temporal variability that can uniquely inform and guide ecosystem managers and scientists conducting whole-ecosystem experiments. This chapter illustrates the potential of retrospective studies to inform, guide, and refine ecosystem experimentation and management using case studies der

A Spatially Explicit, Mass-Balance Analysis of Watershed-Scale Controls on Lake Chemistry, odel of lake chemistry. The analysis is based on mass balance, and predicts the steady-state mid-summer concentration of any specific nutrient in a lake. The approach is specifically designed to exploit the growing availability of spatially explicit data from watersheds mapped over large regions. Sp

Forecasting and Assessing the Large-Scale and Long-Term Impacts of Global Environmental Change on Tcting individual organisms and ecological systems, most of which are not amenable to direct experimentation. To understand, predict, and assess the large-scale and long-term impacts of global changes on the Earth’s terrestrial ecosystems, we need such a new approach for extrapolating the growth of p
