The reversal of the roles of selenium and oxygen is, however, not as dramatic as is that of the operatic characters.

Organic Peroxy Free Radicals and the Role of Superoxide Dismutase and Antioxidants, per se. Of course, there does remain the possibility that stable or free radical products derived from such harmless substances may themselves be toxic. It must not be forgotten that when a free radical reacts with an organic molecule, another free radical is usually formed. The reactions of this radical must then be taken into account.

Oxidative and Peroxidative Damage and its Role in the Aging Process,s when one or several activities necessary for the maintenance of viability of cellular or organ systems decline below a critical level. This can happen randomly in any one of an assortment of tissue or organ systems which are essential for the viability of the whole organism (e.g., the brain, heart or lung systems).
