Throckmorton in Northamptonshire,saw, that had not contracted his expenditure; now, in spite of the increased expenses of family life, of having to marry off his daughters, building and equipping his house, of entertaining largely and making presents — he was always generous — he carried every year a large surplus of cash and was in a position to lend.

The Throckmortons, medieval lanes. Here the Throckmortons were established in the later Middle Ages, were certainly to be found in the thirteenth century, cultivating their fields, making their marriages, being gathered to their fathers in the churches of Throckmorton and Fladbury.

,Continental Tour, 1580–1582,om they lodged, the books bought, the difficulties met with. Throckmorton’s meticulous conscientiousness, the detail of the Diary, stand us in good stead. What would we not give for a similar diary of Philip Sidney’s travels on the Continent in the 1570’s or Ralegh’s unrecorded adventures in France!

Ralegh and King James,ontrol the solution to both these great questions. Ralegh’s conduct at this critical juncture, however, was not controlled by reason, but by pique; and Cecil’s reaction was not only one of mistrust, but of resentment at ingratitude. By August 1601 he was writing that he was ‘left to seek new friends’.
