描述.This book focuses on the mechanistic (microscopic) understanding of radionuclide uptake by plants in contaminated soils and potential use of phytoremediation. The key features concern radionuclide toxicity in plants, how the radioactive materials are absorbed by plants, and how the plants cope with the toxic responses. The respective chapters examine soil classification, natural plant selection, speciation of actinides, kinetic modeling, and case studies on cesium uptake after radiation accidents..Radionuclide contaminants pose serious problems for biological systems, due to their chemical toxicity and radiological effects. The processes by which radionuclides can be incorporated into vegetation can either originate from activity interception by external plant surfaces (either directly from the atmosphere or from resuspended material), or through uptake of radionuclides via the root system. Subsequent transfer of toxic elements to the human food chain is a concrete danger. Therefore, the molecular mechanisms and genetic basis of transport into and within plants needs to be understood for two reasons: The effectiveness of radionuclide uptake into crop plants – so-called transfer co

Radionuclide Uptake from Soil to Plants: Influence of Soil Classification,ke by plant roots. The radionuclides released into the environment can give rise to human exposure by the transport through the atmosphere, through aquatic systems, or through soil subcompartments. Soil-to-plant factor is one of the important parameters to be used in transfer models for predicting t

,Contributions to the State of the Art in Radionuclides–Plants Interaction Field, nsive method in order to clean radioactive-contaminated fields or surface waters. A short review of radionuclides uptake at laboratory scale, greenhouse, and in-field is presented, and our results are highlighted. In a model study, wheat germination is presented here as a cleaning method at laborato

Transfer of Radionuclides to Plants: Influence on the Speciation of Radionuclides in Soil,5 orders of magnitude for radiocesium. This range can be partially explained by the different association of radionuclides to soil particles, which can be assessed by speciation procedures. The fact that there are a lot of speciation procedures in the literature may, in some occasions, make its inte

Speciation of Actinides After Plant Uptake, cay products, the transuranium elements neptunium, plutonium, americium and curium are important actinide elements to be considered in nuclear waste management and nuclear accidents. It is known that the toxicity of an element depends strongly on its speciation and therefore also on its bioavailabil
