Ion Pairs in Liquidsrs recombine very rapidly. In polar media they may be stabilized and exist for a long time due to solvation effects which weaken the Coulomb interaction. A large body of publications is devoted to the properties of such pairs (see, e.g. monograph [.].

Radical Cations in Pulse Radiolysistant for cations in non-polar liquids. Solvation of the cations occurs probably within picoseconds. For liquids such as alkanes or carbon tetrachloride which exhibit a dielectric constant of about 2, cation solvation energies of typically 1 to 2 eV are obtained.
