Electroweak Symmetry Breaking from the Top,the SM. Similarly the vev of the Higgs field that minimizes its potential is an arbitrary parameter of the theory. This lack of predictive power suggests that the Higgs model is at best a low energy effective theory of physics at the EW scale.
