描述.Parsing with Principles and Classes of Information.presents a parser based on current principle-based linguistic theoriesfor English. It argues that differences in the kind of informationbeing computed, whether lexical, structural or syntactic, play acrucial role in the mapping from grammatical theory to parsingalgorithms. .The direct encoding of homogeneous classes of information hascomputational and cognitive advantages, which are discussed in detail.Phrase structure is built by using a fast algorithm and compactreference tables. A quantified comparison of different compilationmethods shows that lexical and structural information are mostcompactly represented by separate tables. This finding is reconciledto evidence on the resolution of lexical ambiguity, as an approach tothe modularization of information. .The same design is applied to the efficient computation of long-distance dependencies. Incremental parsing using bottom-up tabularalgorithms is discussed in detail. .Finally, locality restrictions are calculated by a parametricalgorithm. .Students of linguistics, parsing and psycholinguistics will find thisbook a useful resource on issues related to the implementation ofcurre

Grammars and Parsers,l disciplines, such as linguistics, computer science, and, often, psychology. One of the principal sources of difficulty in the solution of the problem is constituted by the complex interactions between different types of information, such as lexical, morphological, syntactic, semantic, pragmatics a

Overview of the Parser, ent implementation, I then turn to compare this parser to other principle-based architectures. The explanation of the technical parsing terms can be found in the Appendix, section A.3. An overall picture of the organization of the parser is shown in Figure 2.1.

The Computation of Syntactic Features, ich are consulted on-line by an LR algorithm. Not all the principles of the grammar, however, are represented in these tables. In particular the annotation of the nodes by what I have called .-role and Case is performed on-line, while building the tree. Feature assignment can be strictly local to on
