描述Since there are many different tissues and organs in the body, a study of oxygen transport to tissue necessarily involves a great diversity of bodily functions. Furthermore, these tissue functions can be approached from the viewpoint of several disciplines. Even­ tually, however, all of these approaches must be combined to arrive at a comprehensive picture. This multidisciplinary effort, though imperative, has been implemented slowly because traditional biologi­ cal science has been largely organ- or discipline oriented. Initia­ tives to realize an effective international multidisciplinary collab­ oration have assumed increasing momentum for the past 20 years. These include meetings held in Bad Oeynhausen in 1965 (book in 1968, edited by D. W. Lubbers, U. C. Luft, G. Thews and E. Witzleb), in Nijmegen in 1968 (book in 1969, edited by F. Kreuzer), in Vancouver in 1970 (J. Strauss), and in Dortmund in 1971; this last was in connection with the 25th International Physiological Congress in Munich (book in 1973, edited by M. Kessler, D. F. Bruley, L. C. Clark, Jr. , D. W. Lubbers, I. A. Silver and J. Strauss). This increasing international cooperation called for a more formal organizati

Skeletal and Cardiac Muscle OxygenationTissue oxygenation is accomplished through a long chain of complex, interrelated factors. The end result is heterogeneity (in time and space) of local oxygen pressures (see e.g. Duling 1981, Longmuir 1981, Silver 1981).

Effects of Increases in the Inspired Oxygen Fraction on Brain Surface Oxygen Pressure Fields and RegIt has been shown that hyperoxemia causes abnormal tissue oxygenation in, e.g., skeletal muscle (Lund 1979). An inspired oxygen fraction (FIO.) of approx. 0.6–0.7 caused signs of abnormal muscle tissue oxygenation (p.O.) (Lund et al 1980).

Oxygen Supply and Microcirculation of the Brain Cortexonditions within the organ and the oxygen consumption of the tissue. All these parameters may change under different physiological or pathological conditions and thus influence the O. supply of the brain. In the following minireview I will focus on the following points.

Myocardial Oxygen Pressure: Mirror of Oxygen Supplyties. This has just been shown very impressively for the brain by Leniger-Follert (this volume). The heart, also, has its special aspects of oxygen supply: periodic interruption of blood flow due to the heart action, low oxygen content in the coronary veins, continuous changes in the oxygen requirements and so on.
