描述.Oxidants, like other aspects of life, involves tradeoffs. Oxidants, whether intentionally produced or by-products of normal metabolism can either mediate a variety of critical biological processes but when present inappropriately cause extensive damage to biological molecules (DNA, proteins, and lipids). These effects can lead to either damage that is a major contributor to aging and degenerative diseases (or to other diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, immune-system decline, brain dysfunction, and cataracts) or normal physiological function- tissue repair, defense against pathogens and cellular proliferation. On the other hand the body is equipped with a complex antioxidant/oxidant handling system which includes both enzymatic and nonenzymatic (i.e. small molecules such as flavonoids, ascorbate, tocopherol, and carotenoids) produced endogenously or derived from the diet. This book focuses on how the same molecules can have favorable or noxious effects depending on location, level and timing...Each chapter focuses on one particular molecule or oxidant/antioxidant system and provides a state of the art review of the current understanding regarding both positive and neg

Peroxynitrite: A Key Molecule in Skin Tissue Response to Different Types of Stressgedly. In this chapter we will describe a phenomenon in which different insults, unrelated to oxidative events to start with, resulted in an activation of common cellular biochemical pathways. These processes are similar to those evoked following exposure to stressors in which oxidants were shown to

The Role of Reactive Nitrogen Species (RNS) in the Activation of Nuclear Factor Kappa B (NFkB) and Ible for DNA binding, dimerization, nuclear translocation as well as interaction with IkB inhibitory proteins. These inhibitory IkBs bind to NfkB and block its nuclear import and transcriptional activity. NFkB pathway plays a central role in the regulation of diverse cellular processes by regulating

Fatty Acids in the Modulation of Reactive Oxygen Species Balance in Cancerolved in pathophysiological conditions, such as inflammation and cancer. Their effects are mainly mediated by oxidant-induced cellular oxidation-reduction (redox) imbalance. Dietary fat, especially the content and type of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), is the source of oxidants (reactive oxyge

The Question of Balance: The Interaction Between Blood and Ozonezone doses. Blood is an ideal tissue because is composed of plasma, which has a wealth of reductants, which can be easily measured before and after ozonation as well as cells able to cooperate to modulate the oxidant properties of ozone. Blood cells contain not only GSH and thioredoxin but enzymes a

The Adventures of Superoxide Dismutase in Health and Disease: Superoxide in the Balance These enzymes function by catalyzing the dismutation of superoxide radicals to hydrogen peroxide and oxygen, and their action helps to protect cells from oxidation of lipids, proteins and DNA. These enzymes are crucial in maintaining a proper balance of superoxide within specific cellular compartme

Glutathione Metabolism: Favorable Versus Unfavorable Effectsf GSH in organism health..Glutathione (GSH) is widely found in all forms of life and plays an essential role especially in aerobic organisms. In animals, including humans, and in plants, GSH is the predominant non-protein thiol and acts as a redox buffer, in particular keeping with its own SH groups
