Alkylation,Carbon—carbon bond formation via alkylation of organomercurials is a reaction of considerable synthetic potential. Unfortunately, to date there are few general methods to effect this transformation, success having been limited to relatively few examples of alkylation with organic halides and the use of certain organometallic reagents.

Preparation of Organomercury Compounds,solvomercuration reaction will be only briefly introduced at this point and then covered in depth in a separate monograph in this series. This chapter concludes with a variety of elimination reactions which lead directly to organomercury compounds.
