Oxidations of Organic Compounds with Osmium Tetroxide,kaline medium. Apart from synthetic applications in the laboratory these oxidants are also important in industrial syntheses. Osmium tetroxide is the oldest compound and has been generally used for hydroxylation of olefins. Ruthenium tetroxide reacts in the same way as a vigorous oxidant even under mild conditions.

Oxidations with Metal Compounds and Peroxides, acid with hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by ferrous salt.. Thence a mixture of H.O.-Fe. has been called the Fenton reagent. Afterwards, Morrell and Crafts. studied the oxidation of a series of hydroxyl compounds including sugars, but the complexity of oxidation products limited the general use of this reagent.
