This microscopic component of induced polarization is reflected in the spatial variation of the induced EM field through the requirement of self-consistency.

For this reason, we put our main stress on nonlocal aspects of the problem in the present chapter on nonlinear response. This will provide us with a new mechanism for nonlinear processes, which can be used as a new guiding principle for inventing nonlinear devices.
