Superposition model and its applications,t formulas for the d-shell electronic configurations. Besides, examples and remarks are given for the specific applications of the superposition model to deal with local distortion or lattice relaxation, spin-Hamiltonian parameters, and orbit-lattice interaction when transition metal ions are doped in various crystal hosts.

Dynamic Jahn-Teller effect in crystals doped with 3d ions,in contributions needed to model the optical spectra of the Jahn-Teller active 3d-ions impurities and asimple example is discussed in details. Next we concentrate on the calculation procedures required to address realistic systems. Some applicative examples of the proposed procedure are described in details.

Spin-Hamiltonian parameters and lattice distortions around 3d, impurities,ated to the defect structures of some 3d. impurity centers in crystals, including the defect model, the local compressibility and local thermal expansion coefficient of 3dn impurity centers, the substitutional sites for 3dn impurities and the local phase transition behavior for 3d. impurity centers in ABX3-type perovskites, are obtained.

First-principles calculations of crystal field effects and absorption spectra for 3d ions in laser for finding the power dependence of the crystal field strength 10Dq on distance with subsequent estimations of the Stokes shift and local compressibility around impurity. All calculated results are compared with available experimental data.

Cobalt complexes in ZnSe crystals as new absorbers for non-linear optical devices, shown. The Green function formalism has shown to be promising for such kind of calculations.The results presentedin this chapter maybe useful for an analysis of non-linear optical properties of other transition metal doped crystals.
