Availability comparison of two all-optical network approachesdefined. The availability model and calculation procedure are described. The comparison of availability performances has been done for an example network. The availability figures are analyzed and proposals for availability design improvement are given.

PrimeNet — A concept to apply Arrayed Waveguide Grating Multiplexers in a WDM-based fiber backboneating Multiplexer (AWGM). The architecture offers the possibility to evolve from unidirectional virtual ring structures to a fully meshed interconnection. A SONET/SDH based system architecture and a strategy to map ATM service classes on it is proposed.

The Need of Wavelength Conversion in All-Optical NetworksDifferent optical path accommodationn design algorithms are analysed and discussed. Approaches using a rearrangment of wavelengths in each link are also proposed. The results show a drastic reduction of wavelength converters in each node.
