描述In a networked world which is characterized by interactive value creation, traditional organizational boundaries loose importance in favor of processes of distributed organizing. Therefore, thinking about and designing organizations requires going beyond designing hierarchical structures and processes ex-ante, but creating systems allowing for finding adaptive solutions ex-post. This book combines two perspectives: organizing and information technology. On the one hand, it offers deep theoretical insight into the processes of organizing for future organizations and distributed value creation of individuals. On the other hand, it offers applicable technical know-how for the design of information systems to support distributed organizing. Here, managers and organizations embracing complexity find profound understanding and suitable ways for implementing distributed organizing.

Order Creation from a Systemic Perspective: Information Flows and Complexityreate systemic order by abstracting from the mentioned institutional forms and looking at information flows underlying them. Therefore, it, first, looks at the dimensions for describing these information flows and presents a framework, the I-Space, which links institutional forms to a particular configuration of information flows (3.1.).

Method and Data: Research Question, Field of Research, Data Collection & Analysis located in Germany. This study is, thus, informing the design of the information system in part V by looking at the interaction processes of this network of researchers in order to see how ontology-based cognitive maps could be applied.

Discussion: Creating Transactional Order using Levers of Ambiguity in Sensemaking Processesggested, which summarizes and aggregates the findings these themes yield. It allows configuring and conducting distributed organizing processes. It supports answering complexity by focusing on the control of ambiguity. In this thesis, it was already argued based on extant literature that ambiguity plays an important role in distributed organizing.

Facilitating Order Creation in Distributed Organizing: Triggering Practices to Answer External Complever, the combination of both elements, i.e. facilitated interaction with data and automated extraction from user input, finds little recognition to date. The extraction of users’ cognitive maps is either limited to very focussed sets of entities and relations or they are not explicitly used to foster coordination in these systems.

Order Creation from a Transactional Perspective: Creating Practices from Sensemaking Processes This details the systemic perspective on information flows from the last chapter. It adds a perspective on the actual content of the information flows which manifest distributed organizing activities in an ecosystem.

The Dilemma of Distributed Organizings much more a discrepancy between people believing in bureaucratic organizations as a good means to achieve coordinated outcome and create value on the one hand, and people believing in the power of the individual and the coordinating abilities of networked technologies and communities on the other.

Ontologies and Cognitive Maps: Transactional Order Creation through Disambiguating Cognitionsuitable data format. Ontologies and adjacent technologies offer this. Ontologies bring technology, tools, and methods allowing for the large-scale elicitation, sharing, and computation of the conceptualizations of agents in distributed organizing.
