描述Linguistic theory has recently experienced a shift in its conceptual approach from the formulation of descriptively adequate accounts of languages to the definition of principles and parameters claimed to reflect the initial structure of the language faculty, often termed Universal Grammar (UG). Linguistic experience is said to have the effect of guiding the child/linguist in fixing the unspecified parameters of U G to determine the grammar of his/her language. The study of anaphora has been of central concern as it addresses directly the innateness vs. experience issue. On the one hand, it is a part of all natural languages that is largely under­ determined by the data, and must therefore be included in the characterization of the initial state of the language faculty. On the other hand, although the principles that govern anaphora do not exhibit extreme variations across languages, a child/linguist must solve language specific issues for his/her language based on linguistic experience. Discussion,who are guided by the Principles of Binding in solving the problem of anaphora for their language. The question has been formulated theoretically and tested experimentally leading to the results summarized in the following sections.

Results,on 5.3. For each study, the analysis of the data considers (i) successful interpretation of the test sentences as differentiated by design factor, and (ii) choice of referent for the referentially dependent expression, as differentiated by design factors. Introduction,This monograph examines two instances of anaphora in Spanish which are of particular theoretical importance due to their marked nature when analyzed within the Principles and Parameters approach to Generative Grammar, also known in the literature as the Government and Binding Theory (GB).

Theoretical Background,This chapter further explores the two cases of anaphora in Spanish which were introduced in the previous chapter as problematic for a child/linguist trying to define what constitute binding domains. A characterization of these two cases is presented, their implication for the theory is stated and the acquisition issues for each case are examined.

Methods and Procedures,The subjects for the experimental study were eighty (80) native Spanish-speaking children attending private schools in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The subjects were equally divided into four age groups (Years, Months: 3,0–3,11; 5,0–5,11; 7,0–7,11; 9,0–9,11). Mean ages for each group were 3,7; 5,5; 7,5; and 9,5. Overall mean age was 6,5.
