The Alpha-Moral Level: In the Beginning was Darwin,to accept any type of biological determinism have no choice but to concede, at least, that the existence of ethical impulses in human beings is something which could possibly be explained in terms of genetic evolution. This concession usually comes grudgingly, since the good intentions of classical

The Beta-Moral Level. The Good and the Yellow,in in his day had proclaimed it impossible to construct ethics in a strict sense precisely because of lack of evidence about the psychological structure of man, but, according to Smart, even Wittgenstein’s caution actually turned out to be the height of optimism. Even if one day such evidence about

The Delta-Moral Level: Gods and Genes, identical normative codes, it is clear that they do not all invoke the same supreme values. Even so, there is reason for granting separate treatment to ultimate ends and reserving a complete level of the moral phenomenon for them. That reason has to do with the manner in which moral language is used

Moral Progress, usly to the working class, and consequently has to bear accusations of fallacious naturalism. But Engel’s text opens a new and interesting possibility, although of an eschato-logical nature, by alerting us to the advent of ‘truly human’ morals. In this chapter I am going to abandon this shall we say formal perspective in order to make clear some of the consequences of using a theory of ethics like the one proposed, and their significance for certain theses about the relation between biology and morals as sta

Camilo J. Cela-Condehe Professor suffers because he is alive, because he has reached the time of life when death becomes a reality, casting an ironic perspective on all that has gone before; but beyond this existential pain he suffers particularly, as a man. The underlying theme of the novel is the relation between the
