The Moon,nd regions-with only a few comparatively recent crater additions (such as Tycho and Copernicus, estimated to be 100 million and 810 million years old respectively), dates back more or less to the end of the late stage of bombardment by small planetesimals around 3800 million years ago.

Comets, no obvious tail. Only rarely are we treated to spectacular objects like C/1996 B2 Hyakutake, which appeared in the spring of 1996, or C/1995 O1 Hale-Bopp, which reached naked-eye visibility a year later. The arrival of such bright objects is unpredictable, and they may be easily visible for only a few weeks.

Aurorae and other Atmospheric Phenomena, or unusual formations such as lenticular clouds (Greenler, 1989; Minnaert, 1954). Many amateur observers marvelled at the succession of purple twilights in 1991 and 1992 which resulted from the injection of volcanic material into the stratosphere by the eruption of Mount Pinatubo.

The Planets, ely large telescope at favourable apparitions. Jupiter’s cloudscape presents a constantly changing appearance which can be followed in quite modest instruments. When tilted at their most wide-open aspect, the rings of Saturn are one of the most sublime sights in a telescope.
