Unpolarized Cross SectionsThe consequences of the general reaction formalism for this observable, especially for low energies, are demonstrated. The connections between scattering lengths, scattering phase shifts, and scattering potentials are explained. The effects of inelasticity and absorption and analytically solvable low-energy reaction models are demonstrated.

Polarization in Nuclear Reactions—Formalismon between two nucleons and must be considered in nucleus-nucleus interactions. Polarization observables need more complicated descriptions than the cross section. Definitions and the formalism of cartesian and spherical tensor moments are therefore explicitly given.

The Nucleon-Nucleon Interactionre shell-model, and other “ab initio” methods. An important role is played by the question of the existance of three and more-body forces. For ground and low-lying excited states of light nuclei and also for most nuclear-reaction observables for these nuclei these methods have been quite successful.

Spectroscopy at the Driplines, Exotic Nuclei, and Radioactive Ion Beams (RIB) away from the valley of stability. Besides using heavy ions, nuclear reactions induced by exotic (often radioactive) nuclei have become useful tools, which became feasible with the advent of RIB (radioactive—or rare ion-beam) facilities worldwide.

Introduction: Role of Nuclear Reactions in Nuclear and Particle Physicstheir excited states (nuclear spectroscopy), the extent and limits of the chart of nuclides, and the elucidation of the complete network of reactions of element synthesis, the task of nuclear astrophysics.

Classical Cross Sectioncription of observables, e.g. when the de Broglie wavelengths of projectiles are comparable with typical system dimensions (diffraction phenomena) or interference becomes mandatory such as with identical particles. The connection between scattering cross sections and the size of nuclei is shown with a recent application to “halo nuclei”.

Models of Reactions—Direct Reactionssuch as the optical model or the distorted-wave Born approximation. Excitation functions may reveal single-particle or one-particle-one-hole behavior, and angular distributions show marked anisotropies.

Detectors, Spectrometers, and Electronicson, and energy determination of each single event registered. Together with sophisticated digital data reduction the reconstruction of nuclear reaction details and extraction of observables is possible, e.g. also in modern applications such as accelerator mass spectroscopy or in the most complicated Higgs detections systems at the LHC/CERN.

0075-8450 e, contains many derivations.Includes supplementary material.Nuclei and nuclear reactions offer a unique setting for investigating three (and in some cases even all four) of the fundamental forces in nature. Nuclei have been shown – mainly by performing scattering experiments with electrons, muons a
