描述.In the last few years, increasing effort has been devoted to better define the characteristics of tissue damage occurring outside MRI-visible lesions in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and, as a consequence, to improve our understanding of the disease pathobiology and of the mechanisms leading to the accumulation of irreversible disability. This book provides an updated review of the results obtained by leading research groups in this field. The potential clinical applications of what has been shown so far, as well as the areas for future research in the study of normal-appearing white and gray matter damage in MS are extensively discussed, making this book a valuable tool for clinical neurologists who are involved in the daily-life care of MS patients and for neuroscientists involved in MS research..

The Relevance of Normal-Appearing White Matter Pathology in Multiple Sclerosisnsfer imaging support the argument that MS could be primarily a degenerative disease in which focal inflammatory lesions occur secondarily. This chapter will focus on some of the evidence that supports this concept.

Measurement of Blood-Brain Barrier Permeability in Multiple Sclerosisof considerable study. This chapter will describe some of the principles and methods employed in the ongoing research making use of gadolinium (Gd)-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to investigate BBB disruption in multiple sclerosis (MS).

Functional MRI in Multiple Sclerosisd by the disease [4–10]. Finally, brain plasticity is now considered an important factor which might contribute to the clinical recovery and the maintenance of a normal level of function in the presence of irreversible axonal/neuronal loss.
